Praise & Prayer - Autumn 2008

Praise the Lord

One year ago, I (Stephen) had the privilege of praying for my friend Yoshi as he and his wife were obedient to baptism. This year, in a beautiful river located in the mountains of Japan, I participated in the baptism of my youngest daughter, Caitlin. What a joy it was!

We started the school year at Christian Academy with 20 new staff from various countries. This has brought about challenges for the leadership team as new staff continue to adjust and orientate themselves with living in a new country and teaching in a new setting. Please continue to pray for the new staff.

We had a tremendous time this summer as we visited over half of our supporting churches and families. We are grateful for the many meaningful conversations and visits we had. The highlight of the summer was our De Boer family reunion. All 19 of us met at the Blue Mountain Ski resort for 4 wonderful days. It was so fun to see the children play together. Praise the Lord!

  • Lauren moved into grade 10 this year and was a little disappointed that none of her close friends were in any of her classes. This has been a difficult challenge but a growing experience for her. She is enjoying playing volleyball on the Junior Varsity team and was voted by her teammates to serve as team captain.

  • Rachael experienced a growth spurt this summer and is now 2cm taller than her older sister. She absolutely loves 8th grade and is excited about being vice-president of the student council. She also enjoys playing volleyball on the middle school “A” team.

  • Caitlin just returned from the 5th grade camping trip along a river in the mountains. Caitlin was recently baptized in a beautiful river in the mountains. She is coping well with the 5th grade curriculum and is enjoying her new teacher.

  • Jacquie is busy with training her seven new staff in the Elementary division. Not only does the staff need to know the teaching curriculum but require support as some of them are new to Japan. She is also working on her Masters degree through Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Much of the course is online.

  • Stephen is enjoying new challenges as he helps new staff learn how to access resources. Even a simple heating request is done on the computer. This year he has taken a break from coaching tennis and this has given him freedom to concentrate on work and supporting the family.

Prayer Requests

  • Caitlin as she continues to make progress and learn ways to overcome her dyslexia.

  • Jacquie as she balances the demands of being principal, student and a mom.

  • Steve and the jet ski ministry opportunities (two have come to Christ).

  • For the economy as the Canadian dollar is at a record low (70 Japanese yen for one Canadian dollar).
